About Roulette The word "roulette" is originally a French word meaning "small wheel". Now it's one of the most popular table games in casino gambling. The roulette wheel is a balanced wheel with either 37 or 38 pockets in which a ball lands. The pockets are numbered from 1 to 36, plus a 0 or 00, and they're red or black, except for the 0 or 00, which is green. A bet on a single number pays out at 35 to 1. There are quite a few bets you can make at a roulette table besides a single number bet though. More on that later. Roulette History Roulette was invented in the 17th century by Blaise Pascal, a noted mathematician with an obsession with perpetual-motion machines. The "0" wasn't added until Francois and Louis Blanc got hold of the game in 1842. The "00" was added later still, but in early American versions of roulette, the "00" was replaced with an American eagle. Roulette Trivia If you add up all the numbers on a roulette wheel, the total is 666. Francois Blanc was rumored to have made a deal with the devil to gain the secrets of roulette. American Roulette vs. European Roulette American roulette has a "0" and a "00". European roulette has ONLY the one "0". The house edge in American roulette is 5.4%, while in European roulette it's only half that, or 2.7%. American roulette uses special chips that are only used at the roulette table. European roulette allows you to use your other casino chips at the roulette table, which sometimes leads to disagreements about who won what and when. European roulette tables are much bigger than American roulette tables. Roulette Bets Here are the most common roulette bets and their payouts. Please note that the house advantage on all the bets below are the same, regardless of the payout for the bet.
Roullete Betting Strategies The most popular roulette betting strategy involves doubling your bet after each loss while betting on the even odds payout options. This is called the Martingale Strategy. This strategy would work great IF you had an unlimited bankroll and there were no table limits. Sadly though, no one has an unlimited bankroll, and most casinos have relatively low table limits compared to what can happen at a roulette table in five spins.
